Summary

The Ojibwa and Dakota Tribes hated each other because their fore fathers hated each other, which is a horrible reason to hate each other. While Chanuka was out exploring he came upon a dugout canoe, and a little bit farther he came upon a Dakota Indian. He was hoping it was a warrior, so when he got back to his tribe he wouldn’t get in trouble.
When he got to the Indian he saw, he had a broken arm, gashes, bruises, and a fever. Neosho tried to talk to Chanuka but Chanuka wouldn’t respond. When Neosho was back to normal Chanuka took Neosho back to the Dakota tribe. When Chanuka got back, he thought he would get into trouble, but he didn’t because his chief understood that Chanuka was older, more mature, and restless.
The Ojibwa’s chief asked Chanuka to go on a mission to the Dakota tribe to see how their food supply was, so the Ojibwa know if whether or not to attack the Dakota in the spring. If they didn’t have enough food, they would be weak enough for the Ojibwa to attack. Chanuka got to the Dakota camp and waits three days until he sees the warriors come back home. He saw that the Dakota tribe had a successful hunt, but he wanted to get something of the Dakota’s to have proof that he was there. Now since the Dakotas’ tribe had a successful hunt the tribe was having a buffalo dance.
As Chanuka is going through the cabins of the Dakota’s the men started walking through the camp just to make sure there was nobody left in the camp. Chanuka had to hide so he hid under a wood pile, but Neosho ends up finding him. Neosho gives Chanuka the horse costume to wear in the Buffalo Dance so Chanuka wouldn’t get caught in Dakota camp. Before, Chanuka would go dance in the Buffalo Dance Neosho and he had to trade moccasins. If they hadn’t traded moccasins Chanuka would have been caught in their camp which would have not been good. After Chanuka was done dancing he slid off into the darkness and jumped into the river. Only one person heard a splash, and when they went over to see what it was they found the horse costume. Neosho hung Chanuka’s moccasins on a stick by his cabin. When Chanuka got back to the Ojibwa tribe he told his chief the Dakotas’ had a successful hunt so that meant that they didn’t have to go to war. Chanuka was glad that he didn’t have to fight the Dakotas’, because he still didn’t see a point in why they hated them.
